working from scanned sketches

Starting with the full sketchbook page, here are some images from my Night of 100 Drawings. They aren't all great, but I brought them into the computer to try to see what I could do with them. I chose one to develop at first, and sized it up to see what it looks like on its own. It's very rough, and dirty, so first I used the paint bucket tool with white paint to make the background more neutral. I started a more geometric version of the sketch by using the line tool to go over the black areas of my sketch. I made all these changes on separate layers, so my bottom layer is just my sketch. To make a thicker line, change the weight (measured in pixels, it will take some experimenting to see what is thick enough) in the box at the top left of the screen. After going over all my lines with the line tool, I still have some smudges coming through from the sketch. Because I had it on its own layer, I can go back to it and fill in the whole thing with white, making the background clean without having to erase or fine-tune the edges of the lines.

a variation on that sketch

This is made using the same Photoshop document, with the orientation of the composition changed by going to Image --> Rotate Canvas. This shows how the spatial relationships in even a simple design can change when you turn it on its side. These types of changes might make it so that your final piece ends up radically different from your sketches.

quick line sketch in photoshop

I made this in Photoshop using the pencil & brush tools. The lighter lines in the background are made using very thin pencil & brush settings. The thick line running down the right side of the design is made using a thick brush setting with a very low setting for brush hardness - this makes the softened edges.
